Jerome August Scherer son of August Scherer and
Mary Elisabeth (Hensgen) Scherer, was born 18 December 1864 in Deerfield,
Pennsylvania. Jerome graduated from St. Michaels Parochial School and
Canisius High School. For 25 years, he worked for Heintz Bros. Jewelry
Manufacturing specializing in jewelry design and diamond setting. On 25
June 1891, Jerome married Louise Frances Witzel at St. Michael's RC
Church.
In 1903, Jerome Scherer founded Scherer Jewelry. The
store, originally on Fillmore Avenue, remains a success today, though now
located on Main St. in Snyder.
Jerome's interests included music
and photography. Many of the family group pictures that survive today are
a testament to his skill and forethought. Jerome's daughter Hildegard
recalled his interest in music and encouragement in her piano playing and
singing. The piano on which Hildegard played was selected for its fine
tone which Jerome specifically sought.
Hildegard also recalled the
importance to Jerome that his children speak German. Once a week, Jerome
would speak only German to his children. If they asked a question in
English they were told, "Heute wir sprechen Deutsch!"
Jerome A.
Scherer died on 8 February 1948 and was buried next to his wife Louise,
who predeceased him by a year, in the Our Lady Help of Christians (Maria
Hilf) cemetery.
Additional pictures will be included here as
they become available.
