Father F. X. Scherer was born in Buffalo June 13, 1865 to Augustus and Elisabeth
(Hensgen) Scherer. Fr. Scherer was ordained to the priesthood July 27, 1890 in Innsbruck, Austria.
In 1893 he took charge of a small church at the corner of Genesee and Union
Rds. At that time with the church in disrepair, Fr. Scherer developed the parish of Our Lady Help of Christians (Maria
Hilf) to expand it to include a school and grotto. Many remember the May Crowning Celebrations there. Fr. Scherer was an accomplished musician playing organ. He passed away November 13, 1936.
